CHINA TRADE.

CONFIDENTIAL.

[November 27.]

SECTION 1.

[41009]

No. 1.

Question asked in the House of Commons, November 27, 1906.

Mr. Lynch,-To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he will request His Majesty's Minister at Peking to endeavour to obtain further information as to the output of opium grown in China and the extent of such output, and as to what proportion of this native-grown opium is exported from China to foreign countries.

Answer.

The difficulties in the way of obtaining even approximately accurate statistics as to the output of native opium are so great that I fear I cannot get any better information than has already been given.

With regard to the second part of the honourable Member's question, it is stated on p. 100 of the Report for the years 1904-5 on the Foreign Trade of China, annual series, No. 3725, that in 1905 the export of native opium was 4,895 cwt.
